| Ottawa SF Society: January 2009 Plans |
[Dec. 21st, 2008|11:34 pm] |
If you should happen to be in Ottawa in the last weekend of the New Year...
First meeting of the Ottawa SF Society of 2009 will be at the usual place, Dalhousie Community Centre, on the last Sunday in January. We're going to be doing something different, a bit more free-form, around a general theme:
What are you reading in science fiction and fantasy these days? Novels? Comics, be they print or web?
What are you watching along the same lines on TV, home video, or at the cinema?
Is there something going on at one of the live stage theatres around Ottawa we don't know about yet? Maybe at the Ottawa Little Theatre or the Great Canadian Theatre Company(GCTC)? Somewhere else in town?
Maybe something originally for a francophone audience? Or another language altogether?
We're hoping to get some answers to these and other questions from each other...and from anyone else who wants to drop in. If you've got an answer for any or all of these questions, we want you to drop in and tell us about it.
January 25th, 2 PM, Dalhousie Community Centre, corner of Somerset and Empress. |

My first graphic novel, collecting a variety of short stories I've written and drawn, is now available. Yay! It's titled Li'l Kids and is 88 pages in length and features three short stories plus all kinds of concept art. Plus, there's a lot on the writing side of things, too. Not only did I include the script from each story but I also did a breakdown detailing how each story was put together - right from the brainstorming stage to the final script. Hopefully you'll enjoy the peek behind the curtain!

And I've made it available a few different ways, too. First, you can download a free PDF Ebook version at my website (http://www.vonallan.com/shop.html). The link to the PDF is there and there's also a link to a torrent version of the book, too. So if you're not sure about purchasing it sight unseen or if you just prefer an ebook version, this is the way to go. If you do download it, please share it, too. It's licenced under Creative Commons, so if you like it please pass it around to friends and family. One of the hardest things about being an artist is avoiding obscurity. This is an attempt to avoid some of that so please, I would dearly love it if you pass it around.
If you want to purchase a copy, there are a few ways of doing it. The print version is up on Amazon now as well as Barnes and Noble (I'll post the links in just a sec). It will be in a few stores here in Ottawa, Ontario in the near future (including my old bookshop Perfect Books). I'm not positive about comic shops yet. That should be finalized in the next week or two, but things are still up in the air on that front.
The Amazon links are as follows (and yes, in the interest of full disclosure, I do earn a few cents if you purchase a copy following these links):
Amazon.com Amazon.ca Amazon.co.uk
And the link to Barnes and Noble is right here, too!
I'm still a little dazzled that I have my first book out, too. I hope you like it!

For sale:
1 soldering iron for stained glass (has chisel tip, not suitable for electronics). Purchased at Stained Glass Stuff a couple years ago for $80 and selling for $50. Was only used for about 6 months. I'll throw in some flux and lead-free solder for free.
1 black portfolio bag. It is big enough to hold an uncut piece of watercolour paper and it has 2 large inside pockets to organise your work. It has a shoulder strap and also 2 smaller handles so you can carry it as an oversized briefcase. It's made of black backpack-type canvas. Purchased for around $90, selling for $45. In perfect condition.
1 sewing machine in need of a tune up. It's *not* built into a table and works with a standard pedal (included.) It's yours for $20 if you come and pick it up. (It's solid steel, so it's heavy.) I've used it before and it's a good solid C.1970 machine, which I think is actually superior to the newer plastic ones. This sucker actually has metal parts and those metal parts can be replaced as time goes on (if you abuse it). A tune up will probably cost about $50. This is a great deal if you consider the junky quality of the bottom of the market $99 wal-mart plastic machines.
Leave a message soon and I'll get back to you to arrange to get them to you. I prefer it if you can meet me at one of my local transitway stops near my house (Lebreton through to Tunney's), but we can discuss.
